Eight days crossing the two most isolated highland regions in the Caucasus.

Overview

Trekking from Tusheti to Khevsureti is one of the most breathtaking journeys in Georgia. The journey takes us through the Greater Caucasus Mountains, alpine meadows, deep valleys, and medieval villages with magnificent towers. Beginning from the medieval castle villages of Shatili and Mutso, we cross Atsunta Pass (3,450 m a.s.l.) and descend into another mountain region — Khevsureti.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1
    Tbilisi – Omalo

Driving 190 km (~8 hours). Drive from Tbilisi to the Tusheti region — a breathtaking and long off-road ride crossing the main Caucasus at the 2,926 m Abano Pass. Overnight at a guesthouse in Omalo.

  2. Day 2
    Omalo – Shenako – Diklo

Hiking 11 km (~5 hours). Explore Tusheti’s medieval villages and deep gorges. Overnight at a guesthouse in Diklo.

  3. Day 3

  4. Day 4
    Dartlo – Kvavlo – Parsma – Girevi

Hiking 14.4 km (~6 hours). Explore the medieval village of Dartlo and enjoy the views of the Pirikiti valley. Dartlo is one of the most picturesque villages in Tusheti, protected by UNESCO. Overnight at a guesthouse in Girevi.

  5. Day 5
    Girevi – Kvakhidi

Trekking ~5 hours. We start along the Alazani Gorge, passing the abandoned village of Chontio — the last inhabited village on our way. We continue towards the Kvakhidi campsite at 2,400 m. The path goes up through beautiful alpine meadows with panoramic views and picturesque landscapes. Overnight in tents at Kvakhidi Campsite.

  6. Day 6
    Kvakhidi – Khidotani Ridge

Trekking 18 km (~8 hours). The most demanding part of the trek. The trail goes up along the Kvakhidiskhali river, which we’ll have to cross. After the second crossing we continue into the valley to the right and start the ascent to Atsunta Pass (3,500 m). From the top we have amazing views of the surrounding summits and canyons of Khevsureti. Descend to the campsite at 2,400 m. Overnight in tents at Khidotani Ridge Campsite.

  7. Day 7
    Khidotani Ridge – Shatili
